FISHER THEATER "FIDDER ON THE ROOF" Musical, starring Herschel Bernardi, through July 14th.

"Fiddler On The Roof"

BY MIKAL SNELL

"Fidder on the Roof" is currently in town at the Fisher Theater, starring Herschel Bernardi. Filled with a combination of laughter and tenderness, Fiddler On The Roof is the story of a Jewish family who live. in a small impoverished peasant town in Russia. The people in this town are simple and down to earth. They hear little news of the outside world, and their lives are governed strictly by the age-old laws of Tradition.

Fiddler is a triumph of musical theater at its best. With impeccable staging, the director has perfectly captured the ancient dignity of the Jewish community, its ritual dances, its solemn respect for family and tradition, and its warm humor.

Herschel Bernardi, who plays the lead Tevye, was the star of the original production of Fiddler for 706 performances over a period of more than 2 years. Bernardi is a true master at the part; "I love playing Tevye. In many ways he is me, a composite of my upbringin Bernardi was weaned on itinerant Yiddish eater. Always involved in acting, even today, he moves audiences to laughter and tears. He's a true pro.

Fiddler is a touching and moving production. It tells of the good times and the bad that the families of Anatevka experience. And in the end, the Tsar orders all Jews to evacuate their age-old homes and move elsewhere. They begin the long journey to America as the curtain falls.

Fidder On The Roof will play at the Fisher through July 14th. Tickets' are available at the box office and all CTC outlets. For more information, call 872-1000.

And coming soon... to the Fisher Theater is Barnum. Opening July 16 through August 22, the winner of three Tony awards, Barnum, starring Stacey Keach, will be in town. Barnum is a circus exquisitely designed for the stage. The show captures the gaudy but very real glamour of the circus, and the hoopla, too. Outside the theater is a barker's chant, a calliope's compelling call. Inside is the happily idealized 1860's circus setting that won the show a Tony.

Barnum is posh, impressive, literate, musical, and opens at the Fisher on July 14th.O

"YOUR ARMS

TOO SHORT TO BOX

WITH GOD"

returns to Detroit

Currently playing at Detroit's Music Hall, is the internationally award winning musical, "Your Arms Too Short to Box With God." Vinnette Carroll, the conceiver and director of the hit Broadway musical, first brought her show to Detroit in the summer of 1979. It broke all Music Hall attendance and box office records when it played an unprecedented eight-week run. It grossed over $1 million with a sold-out performance every evening.

The new 1981 production was rehearsed and mounted here in Detroit and opened last week. Vinnette Carroll is personally directing the show and Clinton Derricks Carroll is re-creating his Broadway role as the preacher in this new production. And also, for the first time appearing in "Arms Too Short, is recording artist Loleatta Holloway and she performs the showstopping number, "I Love You, Jesus.

Arms Too Short," is a musical version of the Gospel according to St. Matthew. It is filled with that most religious of feelings, pure joy, and it comes at you like the 11th commandment, Thou Shalt Have A Good Time, it proclaims and so do you.

People who know and love black gospel music, will like what they're getting in "Arms Too Short." And if you think you don't like gospel music, this could turn you around. The music literally pours out of the chorus like righteous honey. The sound is so filled with spirit, soul and richness that it makes much of what passes for music today sound pathetically anemic.

The show is filled with plenty of show biz dazzle; It's a colorful, exciting explosion of talent and joy and captures the essence of musical relationships with things spiritual. Its good old-fashioned handclapping and foot stomping that erupts when these singers and dancers feel the spirit. And amazingly, all of this energy flows out into the crowd, as audience participation takes over and people actually get up and start dancing in the aisles.

Vinnette Carroll is clearly an achiever with a definite identity that she wishes to pass on to her students. The gift she has given to the young is the gift to let them dare and grow, explore new territories and discover themselves. Miss Carroll is a disciplined and unique woman. She comes from a background of strong values and strength of pupose and she is infused with an infinite desire to give to others what she has found in her own life a sense of self.

As we go to press, the show dates have been extended. It will be held over until July 12th. Group discounts are being accepted now at 963-7622. Tickets are available at the Music Hall and at all CTC outlets. Call the Music Hall at 963-7680 for more information.

And on Thursday, July 9th, there will be a cast party for "Arms Too Short", held at the Parsonage, Downtown, located at 624 Third, between Fort and Congress, Party will start after the performance on the 9th. Be there!!
